I'm walking with the Rotary Zone 8 team this October to enable more people to access the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is a lifeline for regional, rural and remote areas. A lot of my work is in far flung communities of Western Australia - a vast state where the nearest GP or hospital could be a day or more's drive away.  

That is why this October, I’m joining the Rotary Zone 8 team and taking on a month-long challenge to enable more people to access the care they need, when they need it.

Two weeks to go!

Sunday 18th Oct
The generous donations and moving stories of people who have been supported in time of need by the Flying Doctors has been incredible! With two weeks to go, I am now targeting a total of 50kms and $1250 donations. Every dollar counts for this amazing organisation.

Friday 9th Oct
I have been encouraged by the many generous donations to the RFDS via my campaign to increase my targets! I am now challenging myself to raise $750 and walk 50kms! 

Five days in

Monday 5th Oct
I've so far walked every day since the 1 October! There have been some unexpected benefits. Apart from the fundraising for a cause that is dear to my heart, and the increasing fitness, I have also been discovering some beautiful new walking tracks. Better still, my daughter Christina is accompanying me on as many walks as possible, which is so enjoyable. 

But the fundraising is the real motivation. The Flying Doctors airlifts about 10,500 patients a year in WA, and helps closer to 20,000 people a year once clinics and remote consultations are counted.

That is a massive contribution in anyone's book. 

First walk!

Thursday 1st Oct
1.77kms! I am not fit! 

As I walked, I contemplated the sheer geographic scale of the Flying Doctor service. It stretches across 2.5 million square kilometers - about nine New Zealands.

A critically ill patient could be over 2,000kms from a major hospital. Even in a plane, that is hours of travel. That is why the high speed "ICUs in the sky" are so important.
