Why I'm walking

I'm walking this October to save lives and help more Australians access essential healthcare.

Gratitude

I feel grateful for the many opportunities that came from this fundraising campaign. A daily walk is inarguably good for the cardiovascular system, but more importantly for our mental health also. Being outdoor, smell the fresh air and be with nature helps to reduce stress. Being “in the shoes” of rural folks and having a taste of what they live with being so far away from essential services, 56km that I have done in 2 weeks cumulatively has taught me there are so much more potential that we could tap in. Rural education to increase public awareness is an ongoing process and I’m so glad I got my boys to take part in this campaign with me. The future of our country depends on long term policy changes that are sustainable, comprehensive and inclusive. Together, let’s make this beautiful country a kind and peaceful place for all - First Nation people to new migrants! Here is just a snap of spring blooms on my morning walk to work.

I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Hi friends,

I’m supporting the Royal Flying Doctors Service in their fundraising campaign this October and pledged to walk at least 87km in October.

That’s about just under 3km per day. It doesn’t sound a lot to some but for those who know me, my challenge is to make time to do this daily walk as I also juggle other responsibilities for family and my patients in a busy working week.

Where there is a will, there is a way. For me, the will is to do my itsy bitsy contribution and help shine the spotlight on the RFDS and their enduring work to help our rural communities.

At any point in time, you might find there are so many organisations that need our help. The overwhelming feel when witnessing others’ pain and convert to real action can be stagnant just because of the sheer amount of sufferings there are in this world. Initiating sympathy to an action can be a hump but I trust in your inner call.

I took up a locum position about 13 years ago and went rural to work with the RFDS to provide dental services to remote communities. I can tell you the set up and maintenance is expensive and the RFDS definitely needs financial contributions to continue their good work.

This October, I will walk 87km (or more) as a reminder to myself that our friends in remote Australia are doing it tough. Knowing that sometimes life can be unfair, let’s help make this gap smaller by any small action you can do.

I hope you can contribute to my fundraising page or a thumb up for having read my post as I spread awareness about the RFDS and their good work.

My Updates

Keeping a regular routine is harder than the walk itself

Monday 12th Oct
Anyone who does some fitness would know routine sets results. Occasional high intensity workout can only give a burst but real changes come from regular daily commitments.

So, my routine priority has been to walk daily and do my best to avoid missing a day.

Last Thursday was difficult with a late return home and I decided that it was not too safe to be walking by myself…

So keep up with walking, I decided 9000 steps would be a fair coverage of at least 3km! Wow what an experience with doing 9000 steps in the house. It was walking meditation and lasted for 2 hours. Something I would struggle if I was to do sitting meditation.

The steps keep going….

Making the most of the time while laundering

Thursday 8th Oct
I arrived home around 7:20pm after a hour drive from work. Quick dinner with the family (mid-week light and easy meal). Landromat drive and took the time to fit in a walk while laundry going…making the most of time
