I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.

This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help more people access the care they need. By going further, I hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes!

Together, we can keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work. Please donate to my challenge today!

So far this year

Why This Fundraiser?

Tuesday 23rd Sep

Hi everyone!

Thanks for clicking the link to learn a bit more about why we’re raising money. As most of you know by now, Luke and I have moved to The Kimberly (the outback) where we are teaching at a remote community school. Our community sits a nice 4 hour drive (one way) from the nearest grocery store, hospital, etc and a 6 hour drive (one way) from the airport. It’s easy enough to manage our day to day needs with careful planning, but something we can’t plan for is emergencies.

This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

In outback Australia, where populations are small and spread out, access to these services is limited. This lack of access contributes to up to three times the prevalence of avoidable chronic illnesses. The RFDS works to overcome this, providing a comprehensive range of health services to these communities.

From immunisations, health checkups, referrals or management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular illness and general lifestyle issues, the RFDS primary health services mean there is regular medical assistance when needed for people living and working in remote, rural and regional communities.

Two thirds of the Australian population live around the regional coastlines and the remaining third live across rural and remote areas - sometimes more than a 6 hour drive to the closest township.

Services that are taken for granted in the city are routinely just not possible outside metro areas, and this creates real hardship for the families and communities living in the bush.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service works to reduce the disparity of health service access. They bring emergency medical and primary health services to those areas that don't have access. They make it possible for people to live, work and travel across this large continent.

Please support my fundraising efforts today to ensure the RFDS can continue to provide healthcare equity for all Australians, no matter where they live.
