I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service
I'm running 87km this October to raise money for the RFDS in Western Australia. As I'm currently conducting research at the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health in the regional town of Geraldton, I see the immense value in RFDS services and encourage everyone to support my challenge and donate this October.
Two thirds of the Australian population live around regional coastlines and the remaining third live across rural and remote areas. For those living in remote, rural, and regional areas, access to immediate healthcare isn’t a guarantee. Some communities in WA are an eight hours drive away from the nearest hospital, and specialized care is sometimes only available all the way in Perth (southwest of Australia). First Nations communities, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, who predominantly live in rural towns are especially disadvantaged and often die premature deaths due to inaccessibility and this inherent disparity within Australia's health system.
This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to bridge the rural health gap by helping more people access the care they need. By going further, I hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes! From immunizations, health checkups, referrals or management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular illness and general lifestyle issues, the RFDS primary health services mean there is regular medical assistance when needed for people living and working in remote, rural and regional communities.
Together, we can keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work. Please donate to my challenge today!
So far this year
I’ve helped provide...
13
Laryngoscopes – used to assist in intubating and ventilating a patient.
8
Life-saving medical chests for a remote, rural or regional community.
8
Defibrillator Pads – used with a machine to monitor a patient’s cardiac health.
