Fieldwork in North Queensland means dirt roads, remote sites, and being a long way from the nearest hospital if something goes wrong. Whether we're out chasing geckos on Mt Elliot or sampling plants on Cape York, camping for a field course, or driving hours to a study site, the Royal Flying Doctor Service is the safety net that lets us do this work at all — for us, our students, and the communities we work alongside.

This October, CSE's Zoology & Ecology crew is taking on a month-long fitness challenge for Oceans to Outback, and we want as many of us as possible on the team. It's support for a service that genuinely underpins how we live and work in this part of the world.

It's also personal: EES ran away with it last year, both on kilometres and dollars raised. Time to show them what a team full of people who work in the field can actually do!

The RFDS reaches more than 330,000 Australians a year with 24-hour emergency retrieval and healthcare — that's someone helped every two minutes. Many of them are in exactly the kind of remote and regional areas our own research and teaching take us into.
