Why I'm walking

I'm walking this October to save lives and help more Australians access essential healthcare.

I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

I’ve had to call on the Royal Flying Doctor Service twice in my life, so I figure it’s probably time I gave something back.

The first time was when I was pregnant with my first daughter, Lil. She decided she was ready to make her entrance while we were living in Broome, but Broome Hospital couldn’t accommodate us at the time, so the RFDS flew me to Derby Regional Hospital.

Nothing like your first child requiring a plane transfer before she’s even born to set the tone for parenthood.

The second time was years later on Rottnest Island, when my heart apparently decided the relentless Ibiza-style party lifestyle of Rotto was simply too much for it.

As we all know, Rottnest and Ibiza are practically interchangeable.

Jokes aside, both experiences showed me just how important the RFDS is. When you’re a long way from the medical care you need, knowing there are people who can get you there safely makes an enormous difference. Both times, the people who looked after me were exceptional. They were calm, kind and reassuring during moments that were pretty frightening for me and my family.

So, I’ve committed to walking 98km and raising $1,000 for the RFDS this October.

They’ve flown me twice. The least I can do is walk 98km.

Although I suspect somewhere around kilometre 70 I may reconsider the logic of that statement.

If you’re able to donate, I’d be incredibly grateful. I know firsthand just how valuable this service is, and I’d love to give a little back to the people who were there when I needed them.
