Why I'm walking

I'm walking this October to save lives and help more Australians access essential healthcare.

Walking for a Cause

The Royal Flying Doctors Service is one of the largest aeromedical organisations in the world, the brainchild of many Australians including Rev. John Flynn. I remember hearing the history of the RFDS and Flynn back in Alice Springs when I was very small, and have always thought they were a purely 'desert' initiative; planes to carry sick and injured people to capital cities for care.

It wasn't until I was much older that I realised the breadth of the RFDS' projects, the depth of care that goes into each flight. They provide on-the-spot emergency care, remote medical, immunisation and dental programs, and are free for all Australians. The staff are supported by a vast number of volunteers, and they provide a lifeline for those that live, work and travel in rural and remote Australia. Can you believe they've been at it for over 90 years?!

In Kalgoorlie recently, I visited the Flying Doctors display in the Visitors Centre and got to hear some remarkable stories about people who have been assisted or outright saved by RFDS medical teams. I was also reminded of their efforts every time I saw the signs for the emergency runways scattered along the A1, surrounded by nothing but red dirt and scrub to the horizon.

As someone challenged by chronic illness, I have often considered whether I should move closer to a capital city so I can access the specialist care I need without the extensive commute. I can't imagine what it must be like for people whose closest primary care team is hours away. The RFDS make sure that people across Australia have access to free healthcare regardless of how they live, their social status, their tax bracket, or how close they are to the big smoke.

As for me and why I'm taking on this challenge, the truth is I've never been a 'walker'. Anyone who knows me will attest to that. All of my hobbies involve sitting: video games, cross stitch, embroidery... All things that would be decidedly difficult when walking. This will be a mental challenge as well as a physical one.

My current goal is 87km, though I'm willing to push it further for the right donation amount! My plan is to walk the amazing tracks we have in the Wodonga area and rate them, but I'll explain more about that later.

For now, please consider donating to this fantastic organisation so they can continue their unending work across Australia. Adios!
