Why I'm riding

I think we can all appreciate how hard it can be sometimes to find Good medical care (and riding out the waitlists) in Canberra and even Sydney. Imagine how much harder it is in rural Australia

________

Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.

This is my first time fundraising since *reads notes* Steptember in 2018(? and we don't remember how that went at all for a reason). I thought 247kms seemed doable since the distance is covered if I ride to work. Then I remembered that I don't go into the office every day. Then I also remembered I won't have my bike with me in the last week of October. And that it is swooping season. Despite these issues I decided to persist. It is a good chance to take a step back and appreciate access to decent health care.  Scroll down to see updates on how I'm going. Please support the $$ goal so I am compelled to meet your expectations!

Please note despite the name "Oceans to outback" it is entirely metaphorical and I will be doing no such thing (unless...?). I will try to post some pictures of my rides even if it is just a different angle of Lake Burley Griffin or the Parliamentary Triangle every time.

Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes. wow

Let's keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work.

Thanks for stopping by

AC

My Updates

250kms done, $3000 raised!

Monday 26th Oct
Finished off the challenge on the weekend at Mt Mugga Mugga and Isaacs Ridge! Thanks everyone for the support and your generous donations!! So happy that we achieved this together

75% done, 1 week left

Saturday 17th Oct
Just roaming around today following a random route I found LOL, somehow ended up going through Red Hill, Mt Taylor and Cooleman Ridge. Paused to appreciate these big rocks.

Reached $2000+ and 50% kms! u guys are amazing

Sunday 11th Oct
I tried wearing a shower cap over my helmet cos I read the neon yellow might be particularly aggravating.. alas still got swooped

It was a short lasting experiment. How can they swoop such a cute shower cap

'Oceans' to outback

Thursday 8th Oct
I rode to the humble Acton beach to rep the '"Oceans" part of this event and mark out the first week (still riding and sooo close to smashing the donation goal!! thank you). Acton beach is often overlooked because it is smaller than the eyes can see, being a big beach only for ants.

There are plenty of nicer "beaches" out here in Canberra but I wanted to highlight Acton beach because I pass it on my way to the drs. I actually had to go there 2-3 times per week this year for some time. Reflecting a little, there were already enough hurdles setting that up here in Canberra, imagine needing regular treatment like that from rural Australia. I guess you'd just have to pause everything and be away from home for a while?

Day 5

Monday 5th Oct
I went out to Dickson today including a short loop at Lyneham Wetland. Canberra is so dry I think they take every opportunity they have to make anything a wetland. What next, dig a giant hole and call it a lake?

I reached 25% of the 247km goal today (and edging closer to the donation goal- thank you!). Yay! Good start but the real challenge starts now fitting progress into the work week. AC

Day 4. I'm so moved

Sunday 4th Oct
I can't believe we reached $1000+!! You guys are amazing!! I'm so humbled and inspired by everyone's compassion and generosity. I'm so moved. I'm so moved. I'm so moved (so moved she said it three times). As cheesy as it sounds, you guys are making a difference by providing vital health care and aid to rural Australians when it matters most. And even though it's not about me, I'm feeling very loved and supported right now. Thank you. I'll keep doing my best too. AC

Day 3

Saturday 3rd Oct
Managed to get some kms in this arvo when there was a window of blue sky. Just a regular route but I went clockwise for the first time to keep things fresh. But you know what's even more refreshing? Knowing that regardless of sun or storm this October, there will be a magpie swooping after my life each time I ride and I think that is beautiful

Day 2

Friday 2nd Oct
Rainy and grey today. Rode in for a night out. Got a bit lost from Floriade path closures. To be honest I really didn't want to get out there and the car was looking very appealing, but I decided to show up for everyone who showed up for me (YOU!!). I would never have done it (and got so soaked.) without all your generous support and donations. So this is the power of friendship..

Day 1.

Thursday 1st Oct
Busy day but I can't skip out on day 1. Went for a short ride @ the Narrabundah Wetlands. You probably didn't know Narrabundah had a wetland. The park itself is about the size of a yawn but the interesting part is that before it was a wetland it was more like Narrabundah wasteland. The council turned it into a park to help cleanse the storm and wastewater flowing into LBG. Follow, like and subscribe for more mundane facts. Or better yet, donate to the Royal Flying Doctors. AC

Welcome
