More Than a Fundraising Challenge — Our Family’s Story
This October, I’m taking on my first-ever RFDS Ocean to Outback fitness challenge, and for me, this is about so much more than fundraising. It’s personal. It’s about my little boy, Zeke, and the people who have helped bring him safely home and given him the chance to keep growing.
When Zeke was born, he needed help getting home safely as a neonatal baby. The Royal Flying Doctor Service was there for us during a time when every parent just wants their baby to be safe and in their arms. Little did I know then just how much more this incredible service would come to mean to our family.
Since then, Zeke has experienced two bowel obstructions, both requiring urgent specialist care. The most recent was particularly serious and life-threatening. As his mum, watching him go through something so frightening was one of the hardest experiences of my life. In those moments, all you want is to know your child is going to be okay and that they can get the help they desperately need.
Once again, the RFDS was there for us.
During his most recent emergency, Zeke needed to be transferred to Brisbane for specialist treatment. The RFDS carried out a low-and-slow flight for him, taking the care needed during his transfer so he could reach the hospital safely. That flight represents so much more to me than getting from one place to another. It represents hope, compassion and the chance for my little boy to receive the care he needed when it mattered most.
I will never forget what the RFDS has done for my son and our family. They have been part of his story from the very beginning, helping him come home as a newborn and helping him reach the specialist care he needed during two frightening medical emergencies.
Living in Australia, we know just how big and vast our country is. For people in rural, regional and remote communities, access to urgent medical care is not always easy. The nearest hospital may be hours away, and when someone you love needs help, every minute can feel like an eternity.
Every year, the Royal Flying Doctor Service reaches more than 330,000 Australians through emergency retrievals and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes. Behind every number is a real person, a family, and a story that matters.
For our family, the RFDS isn’t just a service. It’s a lifeline.
That’s why, this October, I’m pushing myself through a month-long fitness challenge to raise as much as I can for the organisation that has helped save my son’s life. I want to give something back to the people who have given our family so much, and help ensure that other families can access lifesaving care when they need it most.
This is my first year taking on Ocean to Outback, and I’m doing it for Zeke, for our family, and for every person who may one day find themselves in a situation where the Flying Doctor is their only lifeline.
If our story touches you, I would be so grateful if you could donate or share my fundraiser. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps support the incredible work of the RFDS and the people who depend on them.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who supports this challenge. You aren’t just supporting my fitness journey. You’re helping keep the Flying Doctor flying.
For Zeke. For our family. For every life they help save. ❤️✈️
