G’day All,
This October I have decided to take part in the Royal Flying Doctor Services fitness and fundraising challenge called Oceans to Outback to help raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
My goal is to ride 609 kms in the 31 days of October and to raise $750.00.
With more than 2,000 landing strips in the RFDS network across Australia, the RFDS aeromedical retrieval team is always ready to respond when emergency strikes. This includes emergency evacuations for people who are seriously ill or injured and require urgent medical attention as well as transport of patients between hospitals.
All aircraft are staffed with a pilot, flight nurse and a medical officer if required. The aircraft are fully pressurised and configured to resemble mini-intensive care units. They are fitted with a stretcher loading system that is fully compatible with road ambulance systems.
I
have been a long time supporter of the RFDS after seeing first-hand the RFDS in action. A few years ago, I was on a bicycle
tour of the outback. It was organised by a lady in Broken Hill to raise funds
for the RFDS. We visited and sometimes stayed at remote homesteads that relies
on the RFDS. One member of our group suffered a very painful back injury and
was unable to continue. We were a long way from any medical services and so the
organiser decided to call in the RFDS. The plane landed on a makeshift runway
that had been prepared prior to the plane’s arrival (a gravel road at our
location). The patient was then flown back to a hospital in Broken Hill.
Please support my fundraising efforts today by making a donation at my
fundraising page to ensure the RFDS can continue to deliver emergency
aeromedical care to those who need it the most.
So far this year
I’ve helped provide...
27
Laryngoscopes – used to assist in intubating and ventilating a patient.
17
Life-saving medical chests for a remote, rural or regional community.
16
Defibrillator Pads – used with a machine to monitor a patient’s cardiac health.
