Why I'm walking

I'm walking this October to save lives and help more Australians access essential healthcare.

Walking the Albany Boardwalk at dusk…gorgeous.

On Sunday I did the entire Boardwalk by myself but to encourage me Alex talked on the phone for the first 85 mins of my walk. He then needed to get to bed as he’s presently in South Australia and they are 2 and a half hours in front of us, thanks to daylight savings. Alex is on his own journey motorcycling across Australia to attend the Christian Motorcycle Association Rally in country NSW. Anyway, I’m not a serious walker but Sunday made a special effort thanks to this challenge. However I wasn’t completely prepared. Things I will remember to do in the future…cut my toenails, not wear new running shoes, not start out late and end up walking in the dark. I did however have the right clothing for the weather and water so it wasn’t all bad. Also walking in the dark is a good motivator to get back to the car quicker!!! I did enjoy the beautiful sunset.

I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.

This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help more people access the care they need. By going further, I hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes!

Together, we can keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work. Please donate to my challenge today!

On a personal note, we would have lost our eldest child if it wasn't for the flight that took him from Albany to Perth in 2024. Our child (20 years old) had double pneumonia and was put on life support and into a medically induced coma. He nearly died in the RFDS plane so would definitely have not survived the 5 hour road trip to Perth. As it was, he had to go on ECMO, within an hour of arrival at Fiona Stanley Hospital, for 17 days. He was in Intensive Care for 28 days and in hospital a total of 41 days. Thank you to the RFDS.  You saved another life and we are forever grateful.
