Why I'm riding
Many years ago, my mum suffered a brain haemorrhage whilst visiting a friend on her property near Leonora. Via road (if you can call it that), the trip would take hours. My mum didn’t have that long. Her friend was an extremely experienced nurse and stabilised her until the Royal Flying Doctor got to her.
Mum was transferred to Kalgoorlie, then soon after to Royal Perth Hospital. 2 flights within 48 hours. Both saved her life. Sadly, ~6 months later she left this world. Yet without the RFDS, we wouldn’t have had the time to say farewell.
That was nearly 30 years ago. And I’ve wanted to thank those who help my mum ever since. Now is my chance.
In October, I’m aiming to ride 1,060 km. That’s roughly the distance the RFDS flew to get my mum to RPH. My goal is to raise $1 for each of those kilometres. I don’t ask much…just a cup of coffee.
Oh, and my connection to the RFDS goes deeper than my mum. My uncle, Gordon Adams, used to fly for the RDFS out of Meekatharra where he met my mum’s sister, Judith Adams.
I’m am doing this in memory of all of them and those yet to need our #RFDS.
I'm fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service
Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.
This October, I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help more people access the care they need. By going further, I hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes!
Together, we can keep the Flying Doctor flying and continue their life-saving work. Please donate to my challenge today!
