Where Dedication Takes Flight
I had the privilege of boarding an RFDS aircraft during my two-year contract in a rural and remote health district. No, I wasn't part of a patient retrieval. Instead, I flew to save hours of travelling by road while making my way to another remote health service.
The experience was surreal, and my excitement was through the roof. As we took off, I couldn't stop thinking about the incredible work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the unwavering dedication of the healthcare professionals who travel vast distances to care for some of Australia's most isolated communities. It's hard to imagine what life would be like for these small communities without access to such vital medical services.
Sharing the flight with several GPs travelling to run clinics in the same remote community made the journey even more inspiring. Listening to their stories and hearing about their experiences delivering healthcare in these challenging environments gave me an even greater appreciation for the commitment required to serve rural and remote Australia.
As we flew over the endless red landscape, broken only by the occasional shimmering lake system, I found myself quietly taking it all in. In that moment, I realised this was more than just a flight, it was a reminder of the extraordinary people and services that make healthcare possible in the most remote corners of the country. It was a privilege I will always treasure.
We're fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service
Australia is a big country, and for those living in remote, rural and regional areas, access to immediate care isn’t a guarantee. For some communities, the nearest hospital is eight hours drive away.
This October, we're taking on a month-long fitness challenge to help more people access the care they need. By going further, we hope to raise as much as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
Every year, the RFDS reach more than 330,000 Australians with 24-hour emergency retrieval and primary healthcare services. That’s one person every two minutes!
